DAY 2 – Nature's Sanctuary & Dzuleke.

Breakfast

After a healthy breakfast, the trip starts with a guided walk through the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS). This community-managed Sanctuary, created in 1998 was a milestone decision for a society where hunting was once a way of life. This decision was a deliberate, common stance to prohibit hunting and logging, taken in the wake of the massacre of the endangered species notably the state bird of Nagaland- Blyth̀s Tragopan. The transformation from the ‘cradle of war to Asia's First Green Village’ encapsulates the convincing story of will-power and deep change.

The sanctuary is a birdwatcher's paradise and there are 200 plus species of birds recorded as per the survey conducted and 72 mammals found in the area. The walk will showcase the unique agriculture practices of the village, ancient terraced cultivation, a model of sustainable agriculture.

Lunch break

In the afternoon, we will go on a short excursion to the picturesque Dzuleke village about half an hour’s drive from Khonoma. The drive to Dzuleke itself is interesting with lovely views and important Naga monoliths and the village is tranquil beyond compare. You can take an easy walk along the Dzuleke river which contains some rare snow trout and observe the quiet life in the village.

Return in the evening, enjoy a local delicious dinner and sleep off.
